Gerard J. Lemongello discusses all the steps taken to correct the malocclusion

Edward H. Angle described class III malocclusion as one in which the mandibular first molar is positioned mesially relative to the maxillary first molar (Angle 1900). A class III skeletal relationship can occur as a result of a normal maxilla with mandibular protrusion, maxillary retrusion with a normal mandible, or a combination of maxillary retrusion and mandibular protrusion. A class III dental relationship can exist when the maxillary/mandibular relationship is normal.

A pseudo class III malocclusion is caused by a forward shift of the mandible to avoid incisal interferences (Proffit 1986). For many class III malocclusions, both surgical and orthodontic treatment are required. Depending on the amount of skeletal discrepancy, surgical correction may consist of mandibular retraction, maxillary protraction, or a combination of both procedures. For some minor class III malocclusions, or in the case of a pseudo class III malocclusion, surgical intervention may not be necessary.

A graduate from the University of Florida College of dentistry, Dr. Gerard J. Lemongello has been in private practice since 1987. He focuses on cosmetic and comprehensive restorative and reconstructive dentistry. Dr. Lemongello is an avid member of the dental community, holding membership in the American Dental Association, Florida Dental Association, and Academy of General Dentistry. He is also an accredited member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.

Dr. Lemongello serves as a Senior Clinical instructor here at the Rosenthal Institute’s Aesthetic Advantage Continuum at New York University. HE is Co-chairman of the Comprehensive Esthetic and Restorative Clinic at the Atlantic Coast Dental Research Clinic in West Palm Beach. He has held numerous positions on the board of the Atlantic Coast Dental Research Clinic and presided as President for two terms.

Dr. Lemongello has published a multitude of articles in leading dental journals. His lecture include a variety of topics, however he lectures nationally on complex treatment planning, aesthetics and implant dentistry, as well as other contemporary dental topics.
